Moses Lake casino in bankruptcy, owes $100,000 in taxes

MOSES LAKE, Wash. -- The gambling license of a restaurant and casino that owes about $100,000 in municipal taxes and filed for bankruptcy reorganization has been suspended.

The Washington State Gambling Commission voted during a meeting Jan. 10-11 to lift the license of Cardroom Inc., doing business as the Porterhouse Restaurant, for 15 days after hearing that the business failed to pay local gambling taxes, disclose a lawsuit and report financial contributions by an owner, spokeswoman Susan I. Arland said.

Ten days are for the three charges and five are for violating an earlier settlement.

License holders are required to report criminal, administrative and civil proceedings, including bankruptcies and divorces, Arland said. Failure to disclose contributions is fairly common, but "having charges issued against you for failure to pay gambling taxes (is) very unusual," she said.

Postings bolster a claim that students were coerced into a campaign, an attorney says.

E-mails reportedly sent to ORU President Richard Roberts back up a former professor's claim that Roberts ordered students to participate in Randi Miller's mayoral campaign, attorney Gary Richardson said Wednesday.

Miller, meanwhile, said she entered the mayoral race after a call from U.S. Sen. Jim Inhofe, R-Okla., and discussions with Roberts.

In e-mails obtained by the Tulsa World, a woman named ''Stef'' sent regular e-mails for two years to Roberts' ORU e-mail address advising him on a variety of political issues. Roberts' sister-in-law, Stephanie Cantees, was paid by the Oral Roberts Evangelistic Association as a community and government liaison.
